The trick is to have the person learn things that are not too hard, or too easy. This is hard to judge and changes with what the person already knows.

Finally, the students tested on the word pairs they studied. The students mind wandered more while studying more difficult and easy word pairs, compared with medium difficulty.

Moreover, after the lecture students remembered 70 percent of information presented in first ten minutes of the lecture. They also remember 20 percent of information presented in last ten minutes.

Standardized tests show which students have well developed problem solving and critical thinking skills.

However, the best students on average have the worst standardized test scores.

A study of 182 students revealed something interesting. It showed that the number of books at home and studying a second foreign language are good predictors of student intellectual ability.

Brain Training May Worsen Performance on a Rest of Recognition Memory

In the first week, the researchers tested 86 participants’ performance on recognition memory. They studied several dozen words, one at a time. later they reported in a subsequent test which words they’d seen.

During the fifth and final week, all participants repeated the original set of baseline tests and compared their performance to the results from the beginning.

All the participants showed improvement. But this improvement was no greater with the working memory training group, or worse in some fields compared with the control group.

This is just one study with a relatively small sample, so it shouldn’t be treated as decisive evidence.

Students who believe in their “free will” do better in learning.

“Free will” means, “I am in charge of my actions even when my life’s circumstances are difficult.

A group of 116 undergrads rated how much free will they believed they have. Later, they completed a proof-reading challenge. The students who said they had more free will found more mistakes in the text and in less time.

At the end of the semester, students with stronger free will had higher grades.

Online Learning for Long Term Recall

The study examined two things in relation to web based or non-web based teaching.

The two things examined were problem solving ability, and biology achievement. Tests given to two groups of students indicated what was happening with each group. One group received online learning only. The other group learned in an offline environment.

Tests applied to the information showed that the web based students did better. They recalled the information longer after having learned it.

They also remained better at problem solving longer after the end of the experiment. This just goes to show that online learning could be the way of the future.

To try being mindful just take some of your time and pay attention to how you are thinking. Don’t judge anything about what is going on. Just look at how you think about things. This kind of self awareness helps you calm down and see things in a new light.

What the study showed is that parts of the brain grow when a person tries mindfulness. The parts that improve have links to calmness, decision making, body regulation, and memory. This shows that taking time to use mindfulness can improve many areas of life.



Harder to read fonts boost student learning about 18%

Teachers used harder fonts on their slides, and handouts. Later they photocopied hand written work and blurred a bit. The teachers then used on class as the control group, giving them the perfect and not hard to read copies.

The other class were given harder reading material:

-12-point Comic Sans

-12-point Bodoni.

The big finding was that students with harder font answered 86.5% of questions correctly.

The other group, with the clear text scored 72.8% on the same test.

This is because we use our brains a little more on hard material, making us have a better understanding.
